Halal Orlando / Sourcing & certification
Halal is not one standard in practice. In Orlando you will meet three versions of it: kitchens serving hand-slaughtered Zabiha meat, kitchens serving machine-slaughtered halal-certified meat, and kitchens with a halal meat line that also pour alcohol. All three describe themselves as halal, and all three are telling the truth by their own definition.
If your household eats strictly Zabiha, the label on the door is not enough. What tells you what you need to know is the supplier, the certifier on the box, and whether anything non-halal shares the kitchen.
The three questions that settle it
- Which supplier do you buy from?A confident answer with a named supplier is a good sign. Vagueness usually means the kitchen buys on price and the source rotates.
- Hand-slaughtered or machine?Zabiha in the strict sense means hand-slaughtered with the tasmiyah recited over each animal. Machine-slaughtered halal meat is certified but is not accepted by everyone.
- Is the whole menu halal?Ask whether pork or alcohol is served anywhere on site, and whether fryers and grills are shared.

- HFSAAThe Halal Food Standards Alliance of America certifies hand-slaughtered Zabiha only and does not certify mechanical slaughter. An HFSAA mark on the supplier's box is the strongest signal for a strict Zabiha household.
- HMSHalal Monitoring Services certifies hand-slaughtered meat and audits the supply chain from slaughterhouse to distributor.
- IFANCAThe Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America is the widest certifier in the US and covers both hand and mechanical slaughter, which is why some families treat it as a floor rather than a guarantee.
- No certifier namedCommon in smaller kitchens, and not automatically a problem — many buy from a certified distributor and simply never publish it. Ask, and judge the answer.
Common questions
What does Zabiha halal mean?
Zabiha refers to meat from an animal slaughtered by hand according to Islamic requirements, with the name of God recited at slaughter and the blood fully drained. It is a stricter category than general halal certification, which in the US often covers mechanically slaughtered poultry.
How do I know a restaurant is halal certified in Orlando?
Halal certified food is certified at the supplier, not the dining room: HFSAA, HMS and IFANCA certify slaughterhouses and meat packers rather than restaurants. So an HFSAA certified restaurant in Orlando really means a kitchen buying HFSAA certified meat. Ask which supplier and certifier they use — kitchens that care about it answer straight away.
What is a 100% halal menu?
A 100% halal menu means everything served on site is halal, with no pork and no alcohol anywhere in the building, and no shared fryers or grills with non-halal items.
Is machine-slaughtered chicken halal?
Scholars differ. Some accept mechanical slaughter when the conditions are met, and some do not. If your family follows the stricter view, look for hand-slaughtered Zabiha meat specifically.
